It's Culture, Innit ?

For your delictation and perusal, I give you my latest cultural recommendations. The comments of BB and TT are especially welcome.

Listening.....

My mate Tapas Nigel introduced me to this, he said it was "awful shit" but he loves it. Me too.
Love the photos from the sixties on this video and what a fantastic song. Judas Priest do a good version too. Currently my favourite song ever. Till my next discovery.

Marc Riley on 6Music had a great session from Alternative TV last week. Sound better than they did in the old days in the punk wars. Listen here...

Riley has the best show bar none on radio at the moment.

Reading.....

Currently reading "As I walked Out Through Spain in Search of Laurie Lee" by P.D.Murphy. An interesting read of a bloke going through his own crisis, whilst tracing the steps of Laurie Lee's own journey through Spain during the civil war in the 30s.

The Laurie Lee book itself is one of my favourite ever and this is good too.

Prior to that, I'd raced through a couple of Tony Parsons novels, "Men from the Boys" and "Starting Over". Yes, they're all similar, but good page turners and he's about the best in that genre I think.

Note clunky grammar in last sentence. Hideous.

Along the same lines, David Nichols "Us" was good in a....I can't say it...."chick lit" kind of way. Bit different to my normal Hitler/Stalin/WW2 stuff, but a great yarn anyway.

So, let's have some feedback and some recommendations from everybody.

  1. Wak I will take some time to peruse. In the words of those interminable tossers Gervais and Marchant I am not entirely happy at present. Did see some one ref. Billy Bragg's New England and not wishing on space hardware the other day in a blog which hit the spot as I never fail to wheel it when ever I see a shooting star.

What sayings do your children roll their eyes up at but can't help themselves repeating as they grow up...
Am reading Driving over Lemons which doesn't quite have the cachet of Laurie Lee and tweeting withering commentary about the Eastenderised Archers.

If I had a digital radio in the car it would mostly be 6 Music. and you are right, the boy Lard has it just right.

  2. What's up Wak ?
Driving Over Lemons is by that bloke from Genesis isn't it ? You should have took that as a warning. Sub " A Year In Provence" stuff isn't it ? As Jarvis said.....

"You see you should take me seriously
    Very seriously indeed
'Cause I've been sleeping with your wife
    For the past sixteen weeks

Smoking your cigarettes, drinking your brandy
Messing up the bed that you chose together
And in all that time I just wanted you
To come home unexpectedly one afternoon
And catch us at it in the front room

You see I spy for a living
    And I specialise in revenge
On taking the things I know will cause you pain

I can't help it, I was dragged up
My favourite parks are car parks
    Grass is something you smoke
    Birds are something you shag
So, take your "Year in Provence"
And shove it UP YOUR ARSE ! "

  3. ES, Love the animation and lyrics to 'Head and Shoulders', very, very good. Forwarded it to our son.

I am a Bob Dylan fan as you know but I can't stand screeching Joan Baez although she isn't that high pitched on that track. Lovely 60's photographs, trouble is the Boss and I remember the 60's too well. Nostalgia or what?

Going to watch the animation again now.

  4. Glad you liked it. I don't normally like Joan Baez, but I love that song. Great lyrics too.

  5. Great lyrics but her voice is like fingernails down a blackboard. I had a girlfriend who loved Joan, it's amazing what you can put up with if you have to.
